Chaplin's Essanay and Mutuals DVDs - Image Entertainment
Includes the latest editions from Flicker Alley and Arte

This guide created by ednapurviance.org is to help you find your favorite Chaplin and Edna Purviance Essanay and Mutual Films. This collections shown above are the best restored Essanay and Mutual Films available in the U.S. This restored collection from the 1990's by David Shepard took nine years to assemble from the best preserved clips found all over the world.

Chaplin did not own the copyright for any of the Mutuals and Essanays, so the films got scattered into many hands. Even in Chaplin's day, these films were copied and kept in private collections. From these diverse sources came the best collection of Essanays and Mutuals since the silent days. With new music created for each film, this collection is a must for any Chaplin Collection. Also the best to see Edna Purviance's early work with Chaplin.

Update: After doing a side by side comparison with the USA edition, I prefer the film quality look of this collection. The Rink and Easy Street are not full frame, but this has the best restored sound versions of those films.

Just noting, for some peoples taste, these may appear a bit dark, a bit soft and could use a bit of sharpening. But they have my favorite tone, coloring, contrast that still shows detail in the shadows and highlights. The film speed is a bit slower, but to my liking, as to my eye, the speed fits the comedy. But that is my taste.

This review covers other key points on why I really love this edition.

USA Mutual Release July 2014 - Flicker Alley
Chaplin's Mutual Comedies
Flicker Alley
US Edition: 1916-1917 August 12, 2014
Great Collection for Edna Purviance Films

Includes 5-disc in Blu-ray and DVD Box Set represented for a limited time in a collector's SteelBook Case edition. Includes option for full orchestral or improvised piano accompaniment. Some of the composers include: Eric Beheim, Neil Brand, Timothy Brock, Antonio Coppola, Carl Davis, Stephen Horne, Robert Israel, the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Maud Nelissen, Donald Sosin and Gabriel Thibaudeau.

Update: After seeing the Arte French edition last winter, I honestly thought the USA edition would be exactly the same. It is not. Changes have been made, including the slowing down of the film speed on all the films. This is the slowest version on sale that I know of. The contrast has been highly increased, and to my eye, over sharpened as well. The high contrast is causing lost of detail in the highlights and shadows.

But if you are looking for a collection that has all the films in full frame, this is the only one that has it. Plus this is the only collection in Blu-Ray. I do not know if the Blu-Ray here is any better than the DVD French edition.

Major change, The Rink and Easy Street silent prints, have replaced the highly restored sound versions in Arte. But these silent version of The Rink and Easy Street in the US edition are not highly restored. There is much room for improvement, as they have scratches, dirt, and highly contrasty.

Just want fans to know, if you saw the Arte Mutuals, and loved the picture quality and tones in those, this US edition isn't the same. I have did a comparison review to help you have an idea.
It's your taste in the end, but I do love the Arte edition the best, for my taste. But it is nice to have the full frames. Just wish the quality matched more of the French ones in tint and contrast. French Arte edition does need an all region player.
