June 12, 2012 - Garen's excellent report of his trip to Stripdagen. (Which got a very nice mention on Forbidden Planet.) June 12, 2012 - Garen will be appearing at Bag-of-Books with a special workshop on June 16th, followed by another fun workshop at Waterstone's bookshop in Manchester, on July 1, 2012. Currently, you can see his latest comic work in the weekly UK comic, The Phoenix (4 part series, The Bald Boy and the Dervish, written by Ben Haggarty, starting with issue 23). Also, from Silvester, Garen received these lovely 'silver coins' featuring Julius Chancer. June 4, 2012 - June is starting off great for RO! Garen had a successful showing at Stripdagen, sketching and signing books, including ones for the beautiful Dutch edition of the three hardbound boxset of The Rainbow Orchid. May 21, 2012 - Garen is very busy on a tight deadline on a new project for THE PHOENIX. 'The Bald Boy and the Dervish' is written by Ben Haggarty and illlustrated by Garen. It's scheduled to appear starting with issue #23. A bit more at this link. The tight deadline has meant the RO shop with Vol. 3 has been delayed for signed copies online. Not to worry, as Garen will open as soon as the 'Dervish' is done! Looks great, Garen (and Ben!). May 14, 2012 - Garen had a successful weekend at Bristol Comic Expo! Certainly have seen many 'hauls' including all three The Rainbow Orchid Volumes. Excellent! Watch for Garen's next appearance at Stripdagen. Garen will be signing special limited editions prints of the cover at the show. Meanwhile, watching out for the special box set of The Rainbow Orchid in the Dutch collection. UPDATE June 28th: Comic Heroes arrived today! Enjoyed Talbot and Ewing the most (my favorite art style in the comics they showed). Also liked The Playwriter preview. Not new, just looks fresh, again, with so much comic art looking alike today. RO Review? The writer has a right to his thoughts, but personally, I think people should get The Rainbow Orchid, themselves. It is well priced and also in a growing collection of libraries now, especially in the UK. And the easiest place to check out is right online at Rainbow Orchid! Be your own judge. As they said about RO, the artwork is glorious. The story maybe your 'cup of tea' too, but you won't know, until you find out for yourself.

Adventures of Julius Chancer Garen Ewing: Podcast interview about The Rainbow Orchid Host Linda Wada, Table Chat, ednapurviance.org Garen Ewing, the comic artist and creator of The Rainbow Orchid - the Adventures of Julius Chancer, graciously agreed to an audio interview with me (Linda Wada, researcher and founder of ednapurviance.org). I wholeheartedly thank Garen for a most enjoyable chat about his long awaited publication of The Rainbow Orchid. I first met Garen in the spring of 2001 and soon learned about the creation of The Rainbow Orchid. Set in the 1920s, The Rainbow Orchid features adventurous Julius Chancer and silent film star, Lily Lawrence, along with a strong supporting cast of characters including: the devious Evelyn Crow, historical researcher Sir Alfred Catesby-Grey, Lily's publicity agent Nathanial Crumpole, mysterious Urkaz Grope and leading gossip columnist and stirrer of trouble, William Pickle. All of them are involved on an adventure to find the mythical flower last mentioned by the ancient Greek philosopher and botanist, Theophrastus. Julius must find it to save the estate of Lily's father, Sir Lawrence. Drawn in the Franco-Belgian school of bande dessinée (a clear line style), the comic has great characters, a complex story and quality artwork. Garen's comic quickly became my favorite and I have been following the development of the story and project ever since. You never know for sure, but I always had faith it would be picked up by a publisher one day, and that day has finally arrived.
Garen gives his personal insight on drawing and the world of publishing, (with surprises intermixed). Garen's love of silent films does play a role in the creation of his comic. Garen's book features silent film star, Lily Lawrence, who Edna Purviance is her friend. We hope you will enjoy listening to his story, and maybe gain some valuable insights through his experience in creating his comic and entering the publishing world. About Table Chat host Linda Wada: Ednapurviance.org started in November 2001. Linda, as part of Leading Ladies, published the first book to feature Edna Purviance called The Sea Gull in 2008. The book was about Edna's starring role in the now lost Charlie Chaplin film production, which was directed by Josef von Sternberg. In the summer of 2006, Linda showed her first video interview with Lita Hill (Edna Purviance's grand niece) at Cinecon in Hollywood. Lita was our special guest at the event.
